Venus
Williams will join her sister Serena Williams in the second round of the Australian
Open after beating Germany’s Angelique Kerber in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.
Williams
pounded out 7 aces in the match and collected 28 winners while breaking Kerber’s
serve on 5 of 11 opportunities.
Williams
has won seven Grand Slam singles titles, five at Wimbledon and two at the U.S.
Open. Venus reached the finals at the Australian Open in 2003 but lost to
Serena in three sets. Of the six times Venus Williams has finished runner-up at
a Grand Slam event she has lost to Serena in five of those finals.
