Lance
Armstrong completed his first day back to professional cycling and finished 120th
after the opening leg of the Tour Down Under in Australia.
Armstrong
and the other 132 rider shad to battle heat that topped 103 degrees while
climbing hills through the Barossa Valley outside Adelaide. For Armstrong the
first leg marked a return to cycling after a three-year absence following his
seventh Tour de France victory.
Despite
finishing ahead of just 13 other riders Armstrong was happy with his
performance and his ability to handle the conditions. Shortly after completing the
trek the 37-year-old Armstrong stated, “It's nice to get one under way and
tomorrow's another hard day. I want to take it day by day but I think the early
indications are that I feel pretty good, pretty strong.”
The
second stage of the Tour Down Under is a 90-mile ride. The race will end on
Sunday.
