The
Boston Red Sox and Jonathan Papelbon have avoided arbitration as the club inked
the closer to a one-year deal worth $6.25 million.
According
to reports the Red Sox and Papelbon discussed a multi-year deal but were unable
to reach an agreement. The hard-throwing right hander won’t become a free-agent
until the end of the 2011 season.
Papelbon
was eligible for arbitration and the new deal represents the largest ever price
tag for a first-time arbitration eligible pitcher.
