Israeli Army to Investigate Claims it Used White Phosphorous in Gaza Attacks

The Israeli army is responding to allegations that it used white phosphorous during its three-week assault on Hamas targets in Gaza, saying it will investigate the claims made by human rights groups.

White phosphorous is considered an incendiary weapon and as part of an international convention it was agreed that it should not be used around civilians. Despite that agreement several human rights groups have accused Israel of using white phosphorous shells.

When exposed to white phosphorous a civilian can suffer intense burns that often go right through the bone, often causing death. The United Nations has said their headquarters in Gaza was struck by three shells containing the illegal weapon, causing a fire that destroyed much of their supplies.

Israel declared a unilateral ceasefire in Gaza over the weekend and have since removed their troops from the region. Hamas followed by declaring their own ceasefire but both sides remain ready to strike if provoked.

More than 1,300 Palestinians were killed in the three-week assault in the Gaza Strip, many of those killed were civilians.
