Andy
Roddick found his second round matchup at the Australian Open decidedly different
than his first round test as he needed four tough sets to get past Belgium’s
Xavier Malisse 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 at tennis’ first Grand Slam event of the
year.
Roddick
had to weather the storm of the first set but managed to remain calm and
continue to play his game as he pounded out an impressive 19 aces and won 83
percent of his first serves. The American limited his unforced errors to 27
while taking advantage of the 50 committed by Malisse.
Roddick
has one Grand Slam singles title to his credit, a 2003 win at the U.S. Open. He
has reached the semi-finals at the Australian Open on three occasions but fell
in each of those matches. The American has also appeared in a pair of Wimbledon
finals but lost to Roger Federer both times.
