Jelena
Dokic continued her remarkable comeback as a packed house cheered her past Anna
Chakvetadze in three sets 6-4, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 at the Australian Open.
Dokic
had a chance to serve out and win in the second set but a series of errors
forced a third set but the Australian resident bounced back, controlled her
nerves and took command of the match. Dokic wasn’t exactly flawless but she was
opportunistic as she broke Chakvetadze on 6 of 15 opportunities. Chakvetadze
committed 50 unforced errors including 16 double faults in the match.
Dokic
had been ranked as high as #4 in the world in 2004 but she slowly withdrew from
tennis as problems with her family and a battle with depression left many
wondering if she would ever return. Dokic’s best finish at a Grand Slam was a
semi finals appearance at Wimbledon in 2000.
