Sexist chants cause Yale fraternity suspension

By: Daun Lee

The Yale fraternity that lists both Bush presidents as alumni had their campus activities and recruitment suspended for five years, according to the Associated Press. Yale has been the subject of controversy after present and former female students revealed the university repeatedly downplayed allegations of sexual harassment on their campus.

The Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity had pledges hold up signs that said “We love Yale sluts”. Last October the fraternity pledges paraded around the campus and shouted out sexual phrases. The fraternity has been under investigation by Yale officials and their decision to suspend their activities comes to ensure the Yale campus is “an educational environment free from harassment and intimidation.”

The US Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights began an investigation last month into the way in which Yale handled allegations of sexual harassment.

College campuses are often forgotten when discussing sexual harassment, many people are under the impression this is a workplace issue. Sexual harassment attorneys can attest to the fact that sexual harassment is a prevalent problem in intuitions of higher education. Close to 62 percent of women admit they have been harassed by fellow college students.

Speaking out about sexual harassment is one way to combat the problem, but in some instances it is necessary to hire a sexual harassment lawyer, especially if the college has not taken the right steps to eliminate the harassment. A sexual harassment attorney will be the necessary advocate for any person who has faced harassment.
