Do Alcohol-Related Arrests Boost Hollywood Careers?

In Los Angeles it seems the regular rules don’t apply as drug or alcohol charges can make, not break, a career.

An arrest used to be a career killer in Hollywood, but is a night in jail (or a month) a new way to boost celebrity status?

Reality star Audrina Patridge has been known to date bad boys, and now her on again-off again-on again boyfriend Corey Bohan was arrested last week for public intoxication. The Hermosa Beach Police Department charged 29-year-old Bohan, a VH1 reality star in his own right, with a misdemeanor. He spent eight hours in jail before posting $500 bail.

Earlier in the day, the Los Angeles-based pair was reportedly picnicking in Griffith Park. Later that night Patridge took to the Twittersphere to comment on her beau’s legal issues, saying, "I absolutely hate what Jack Daniels does to people. Jack is a bad, bad man!"

Does Bohan’s behavior and his girlfriend’s lighthearted “tweet” make alcohol abuse seem more acceptable? Possibly, although they’re certainly not alone in their cavalier attitude toward substance abuse. The list of Hollywood actors who have been arrested for DUI or other drug- or alcohol-related issues seems to be growing every day, with no real adverse effects to their careers. It’s a dangerous trend for impressionable young people who admire this lifestyle and strive to emulate what they see.
