Over 500 Illegal Immigrants Detained in Mexico

Over 500 illegal immigrants from multiple countries were discovered traveling inside two tractor-trailers in Mexico on Tuesday. Mexican authorities say the trucks had entered the southern state of Chiapas from Guatemala and were bound for the city of Puebla, which is located about 2 hours outside of Mexico City. Four smugglers were arrested.

The migrants were discovered when the truck was scanned with X-ray detectors at a checkpoint in Chiapas. Police say the trucks contained a total of 513 people – 410 from Guatemala, 47 from El Salvador, 32 from Ecuador, 12 from India, 6 from Nepal, 3 from China, 1 from Honduras, 1 from Japan, and 1 from the Dominican Republic. Each person paid about $7,000 to be smuggled in to the United States.

A spokesman for the attorney general’s office described the traveling conditions as “inhuman.” Many of the migrants received medical treatment for dehydration.
