Israel
has warned that the delicate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip could quickly erupt
into a new round of violence if tunnels are reopened by Palestinians.
The
tunnels are used by Palestinians to smuggle goods into Gaza from Egypt but
Israel has said Hamas militants have been using the tunnels to bring in
weapons. Those weapons have been used to launch rocket attacks into southern
Israel, the main reason for Israel’s military offensive in Gaza.
Israel
has enforced a blockade of the Gaza Strip and Palestinians have argued that the
tunnels are their only means of acquiring the basic supplies needed for
survival. The tunnels were a main target of Israeli strikes during their 22-day
offensive and according to Defense Minister Ehud Barak more than 150 of the tunnels
had been destroyed.
Many
of those destroyed tunnels have now been reopened and Israel has issued a stern
warning against smuggling, assuring the Palestinians that they would take swift
action if the tunnels continued to operate.
While
Israel has demanded an end to smuggling the Palestinians have called for an end
to the Israeli blockade of Gaza.
