Officials in Argentina have confirmed 22 people on board a Sol Lineas Aereas flight died when the aircraft crashed in Rio Negro province Wednesday night.
The pilot issued a distress call about 45 minutes in to the flight. The plane went missing shortly after and then crashed in a remote area in the foothills of the Andes. The Saab 340 twin-engine aircraft, which was en route to Comodoro Rivadavia from Neuquen, was carrying 3 crew members, 18 adults and 1 child.
Federal investigators were called to the crash site to determine the cause of the accident. The National Civil Aviation Administration said the area was “experiencing very bad weather conditions” at the time of the crash, but it is still unclear if weather was a factor.
“The plane is in multiple charred fragments. Everything is burnt and smashed to pieces,” said Ismael Ali, a hospital director who was part of a rescue team.
