The women’s draw in the Australian Open took a major hit in the second round as Venus Williams was bounced out by Carla Suarez Navarro in three sets 2-6, 6-3, 7-5.
Williams committed 37 unforced errors in the match and allowed Navarro to break her serve on four occasions. It looked like Venus had the match won as she led 5-2 in the third set but Navarro battled back to stun the American.
Carla Suarez Navarro reached the quarterfinals of the 2008 French Open, her first Grand Slam appearance. The 20-year-old lost in the second round of Wimbledon last year.
