LA Dodger’s half-owner pushes to sell team

By: Daun Lee

Jamie McCourt who owns half of the LA Dodgers asked a judge to allow the sale of the LA Dodgers to be divided up between her and Frank McCourt. Frank McCourt wants to hold onto the team while he waits for approval to sign a deal with FOX, which would help alleviate the financial strain the team is facing.

Jamie stated that she feels as though Frank McCourt isn’t operating the team in the best interest of their “marital estate.” If the MLB seizes the team they can sell the franchise without maximizing the value of the McCourt assets. A private sale would be more profitable for the divorcing couple.

Both of the McCourts blame each other for the financial troubles the team is facing. According to Jamie, the seizure by the MLB proves how Frank has mishandled management of the team. Meanwhile, Frank accuses Jamie of the driving the team into fiscal issues by her personal excesses; she has seven homes according to one of Frank’s attorneys.

The blame game is common in a divorce proceeding, which is why a divorce attorney is crucial for couples who have large estates to divide. The division of assets and the custody of any children are the most important aspects of dissolution that a divorce lawyer has to handle. Each person involved in a divorce will want to keep as much as they can, and because divorce is a deeply emotional issue, a divorce attorney is needed to temper any vindictiveness the parties may feel.
