Virgina Tech student Xin Yang was murdered Wednesday night by a fellow student who attacked her with a knife and decapitated her. Yang was killed at the Au Bon Pain restaurant in the Graduate Life Center around 7 p.m.
The suspect, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu, was taken into custody by campus police at the scene. “There was blood on him,” says campus police Chief Wendell Flinchum.
It is unclear what sparked the attack. School records show that Yang and Zhu knew one another. Yang, 22, arrived at the school two weeks ago to study accounting. Zhu had been at the school since fall 2008.
Virginia Tech spokesman Mark Owczarski said Yang’s murder was the first on campus since the April 2007 massacre in which 32 people were shot to death by Seung-Hui Cho, who killed himself after the rampage.
“Our hearts go out to the victim and her family,” said school President Charles W. Steger in a letter to the campus community. “An act of violence like this one brings back memories of the April 16 tragedy and I have no doubt that many of us feel especially distraught.”
Zhu has been charged with first-degree murder and is being held in jail without bail.
