Brazilian Model Loses Hands and Feet after Misdiagnosis

Mariana Bridi da Costa, a 20-year-old Brazilian model who had been a finalist to represent her country at the Miss World pageant, had her hands and feet amputated after doctor’s misdiagnosed a urinary infection she had contracted.

Doctors told Bridi da Costa that she had been suffering from kidney stones after she became sick on Dec. 30 but as her health continued to deteriorate they soon realized she suffered a much more severe infection, pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterium.

By the time doctors realized she had been infected by pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterium the damage had been done as septicemia had made its way into her limbs. Septicemia is the presence of bacteria in the blood, an infection that can often prove fatal.
