Substance Abuse Treatment Tune-ups

Celebs and others aren’t waiting until they relapse to return to treatment.

He’s one of our favorite Friends and a talented comedic actor. Matthew Perry is also in recovery, following a past battle with prescription painkillers and alcohol, which landed him in rehab in 1997 and 2001.

Recently, without any embarrassing stories or TMZ videos to urge him on, Perry announced he’s going back into treatment as part of his ongoing recovery. The 41-year-old who brought the character Chandler Bing to life and recently appeared in ABC’s Mr. Sunshine issued the following statement:

"I'm making plans to go away for a month to focus on my sobriety and to continue my life in recovery. Please enjoy making fun of me on the World Wide Web.”

A source told People magazine, "There was no relapse," and that the actor plans to enter the facility shortly.

It’s part of a growing trend of those in recovery returning to residential treatment for a “tune-up.” As the stigma of addiction and substance abuse lessens, it makes it easier for those who are struggling to be honest and open about the ongoing process of recovery.
