Bulleit Bourbon & Rye Tasting at Houston Bar Reserve 101

Downtown Houston Bar Reserve 101 will hold a complimentary tasting of Bulleit Bourbon and Rye whiskeys May 24 at 6:30 p.m.

The bourbon dates to the 1830s when Augustus Bulleit moved from New Orleans to Louisville, KY, where he created unique Bourbon with a high rye content. In 1860, while transporting barrels of his whiskey to his hometown, the distiller mysteriously disappeared. Over a century later, his great-great grandson Tom Bulleit resurrected the brand and the comeback Bourbon hit the market in 1999. Bulleit introduced a Rye Whiskey in March 2011.

Bulleit Bourbon is produced at Kirin’s Four Roses Distillery in Lawrenceville, KY; the Rye is made at Lawrenceburg Distillery Indiana. Both are marketed in bottles reminiscent of old patent medicine flasks with raised lettering and cork stoppers. Bulleit Bourbon has won numerous awards and the Rye is destined for similar accolades. Whiskey blogger Chuck Taggart described it as “big and complex and spicy and absolutely delicious.”

Reserve 101, “not your daddy’s whiskey bar,” is located downtown at the corner of Caroline and Dallas, across from House of Blues. The bar stocks over 170 varieties of premium whiskey, plus other liquors, beer and wine. In addition to whiskey, it specializes in Martinis, Signature Cocktails and infusions-organic material such as apples, peaches, cinnamon and pecans (even tobacco) steeped in liquor to impart flavor.

“Happy Hour,” with dollar-off beers and wines and half-price Signature Cocktails runs from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday with specials just about every day of the week, including Sundays.
