The
United Nations has stepped up pressure on Italy concerning the detention of
more than 2,000 migrants being held at a center on a southern island.
According
to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees the detention center had a capacity
for 850 migrants and the overcrowding has forced many to sleep outside.
Italy
had originally set up the detention center on Lampedusa to house migrants
rescued at sea while arrangements were made to move them into southern sections
of the country. Last month that policy changed and Italy declared all migrants
would remain on Lampedusa while their asylum bids were considered.
Many
of the migrants on Lampedusa were rescued at sea as they made the dangerous
journey from Africa. Last year nearly 32,000 immigrants spent time in the detention
center on Lampedusa and with Italy’s change in policy the UNHCR has warned the overcrowding
was “creating a humanitarian situation of concern.”
