Iceland to Hold Early General Election, PM Geir Haarde Announces He Will Not Seek Re-Election

Prime Minister Geir Haarde has announced Iceland will hold early general elections as pressure from citizens continues to mount following the collapse of the banking system.

Haarde announced that the general election would be held on May 9, less than two years after he took the leadership position of the coalition government formed by his Independence Party and the Social Democratic Party.

According to Icelandic law Haarde was not required to call for a general election until 2011 but protestors had been demonstrating against the current government since October.

The PM also announced that he would not be seeking re-election for the leadership position within his Independence Party, saying he would be traveling abroad to have surgery following the recent revelation that he had a malignant throat tumor.
