Rwandan Officials Arrest Tutsi Rebel Leader Gen. Laurent Nkunda

In an effort to halt the fighting between rebel forces in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo troops from Rwanda and DR Congo agreed to carry out joint operations and now the two sides have announced they have arrested Gen. Laurent Nkunda, leader of the most powerful Tutsi rebel group in Congo, the CNDP.

Nkunda was nabbed by Rwandan officials as he crossed the border from Congo and his arrest has surprised many who felt that the African country had been supporting the rebel leader.

Nkunda had been engaged in several fights with Congolese government troops and Hutu militia, stating he was defending the minority Tutsi community but the violence has led to more than 250,000 people fleeing their homes in fear for their life.

The fighting between Tutsi and Hutu rebels in eastern DR Congo have been viewed by many as a proxy war between the governments of Rwanda and Congo but the arrest of Nkunda by Rwandan officials has appeared to ease some of those claims.

With the arrest of Nkunda the focus of the joint operation has turned its attention to tackling the Hutu rebels of the FDLR. Many of the leaders have been tied to the Rwandan genocide in 1994 that left more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus.
