Roger
Federer continued his push for a fourth Australian Open title and his quest to
tie Pete Sampras for most Grand Slam singles titles, knocking off Marat Safin
in straight sets 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5) to advance to the fourth round in
Melbourne.
Federer
had a strong command of his serve, never allowing Safin a break point
opportunity while he managed to break the Russian on three of his four chances.
Federer collected winners on 85 percent of his first serve offerings.
With
his title at the U.S. Open in 2008 Federer now has 13 Grand Slam singles
titles, one shy of the record 14 Grand Slam singles titles held by Pete
Sampras. Federer has won the Australian Open three times (most recently in
2007), Wimbledon five times and the U.S. Open five times.
