Jelena
Jankovic moved a step closer to capturing her first Grand Slam singles title
but it wasn’t easy as the world’s number one needed nearly two hours to beat Ai
Sugiyama in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the third round of the Australian Open.
Jankovic
took advantage of her opportunities as she broke Sugiyama’s serve on three of
her four chances. While Jankovic didn’t have a single ace in the match she
controlled games with a strong ground attack.
Despite
being the world’s number one ranked women’s tennis player Jankovic has yet to
win a Grand Slam singles title. She reached the semi-finals at last year’s
Australian Open before falling to Maria Sharapova.
