Mariana Bridi da Costa, a 20-year-old Brazilian model who had twice reached the finals in competition to represent her country at the Miss World pageant, has died after complications from an infection that led to her feet and hands being amputated.
After falling ill in late December Bridi went to doctors who diagnosed the problem as kidney stones. Bridi left the hospital but her condition worsened until she was forced to return to the hospital at which time doctors realized she had suffered a much more serious problem.
She was diagnosed as having contracted pseudomonas aeruginosa bacterium which caused a urinary tract infection. While doctors were able to diagnose the urinary tract infection another deadly infection had set in, septicaemia.
Septicaemia is the presence of bacteria in the blood and often proves fatal. Doctors had been forced to amputate Bridi’s feet and hands due to septicaemia cutting the circulation of blood to her extremities. They had also removed part of her stomach in an effort to save her life but she died early Saturday morning from complication.
