Kay Yow, who for more than three decades coached the North Carolina State Wolfpack women’s basketball team, has died at the age of 66 after a lengthy battle with breast cancer.
Yow was initially diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 but she fought the disease for more than two decades while becoming one of the most visible advocates for research and awareness surrounding the disease.
Throughout Yow’s battles she continued to focus on staying positive and remained on the sidelines of her Wolfpack squad. Just one year after being diagnosed with breast cancer Yow led the U.S. women’s team to a gold medal at the Seoul Olympics.
While Yow collected more than 700 wins over her career and was inducted into the Naismith Hall of Fame she was more than just a coach. Yow became an inspiration for not only those who suffered from the same disease she battled but for her all her players and those around her.
Over her career Yow won four ACC tournament championships and earned 20 trips to the NCAA tournament, reaching the Sweet 16 eleven times and the Final Four in 1998.
