Australian Open 2009 Third Round Results: Elena Dementieva Survives, Struggles to Get Past Samantha Stosur but Advances into Fourth

Elena Dementieva found the third round decidedly different than the second as she was forced to battle throughout and just edged Samantha Stosur 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to advance to the fourth round at the Australian Open.

Dementieva barely broke a sweat in her second round win over Iveta Benesova but Stosur proved much more challenging. In the end it was the unforced errors of Stosur that proved to be the difference as the Australian committed 36 compared to the 19 hit by Dementieva.

Dementieva has yet to capture a Grand Slam singles title but has reached the finals at the U.S. Open and French Open in 2004.
