The United Nations have reopened schools in the Gaza Strip, enabling more than 200,000 students to return to classes following a three-week conflict between Israeli forces and Hamas militants.
It was Israeli airstrikes and ground assaults that turned the schools into shelters for thousands of Palestinians who saw their homes destroyed. Now that Israel and Hamas have each declared a ceasefire and an Israeli ban on UN and foreign aid workers in Gaza has been lifted several schools will be opening their doors.
While the UN has decided to open schools there is a massive amount of work that needs to be done in Gaza to return the region to where it was prior to the conflict. There are still more than 50,000 Palestinians who are homeless and more than 400,000 are without running water.
Opening the schools is the first step in bringing back some degree of normalcy for Palestinian children but on day one of the reopening there were still plenty of signs that the destruction of the conflict remained fresh. According to estimates more than 400 children died in the attacks, leaving empty desks as a reminder that the conflict between Israel and Hamas involved more than just militants.
UN schools were not to be the target of Israeli attacks but according to Israeli forces Hamas had been using the schools as bases from which they launched attacks.
