An overcrowded ferry carrying nearly eight times its capacity sank after being battered by strong currents in the Gianh river in central Vietnam, leaving at least 40 dead many of them women and children.

According to police the ferry had a capacity for 12 people but had 80 on board when it began struggling in the turbulent water. One survivor reported the ferry sank as several passengers rushed to get off as it approached a pier.
