Pakistani officials say 10 troops were killed in a 17 hour siege on the Mehran naval air station in Karachi. The attack was carried out by 6 Taliban militants armed with grenades, machine guns and rockets. The Taliban said the attack was carried out to avenge Osama bin Laden, who was killed in Abbottabad earlier this month by U.S. forces.
Interior Minister Rehman Malik reported 15 Pakistani troops were injured. At least one of the militants died after detonating explosives packed in his jacket. The bodies of two other attackers have been recovered and a fourth is believed to be buried under rubble. Authorities believe the two other militants escaped.
The attack was launched around 11 p.m. Sunday. By Monday afternoon, the military was back in control of the base.
