Jelena Dokic has advanced to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open after a stirring three set victory over Alisa Kleybanova 7-5, 5-7, 8-6 in just over three hours.
Dokic continued her amazing run through Melbourne as she collected 46 winners despite hitting 58 unforced errors, including 11 double-faults that nearly cost her the match. Both women found themselves attacking the other’s serve as Dokic broke Kleybanova’s serve on 7 of 17 opportunities while Kleybanova managed to break Dokic 6 times.
Dokic will now face Dinara Safina in the quarterfinals.
Dokic had been ranked as high as #4 in the world in 2004 but she slowly withdrew from tennis as problems with her family and a battle with depression left many wondering if she would ever return. Dokic’s best finish at a Grand Slam was a semi finals appearance at Wimbledon in 2000.
