A group of policemen were attacked in eastern India Monday by suspected Maoist insurgents, authorities say. The men were ambushed after their vehicle broke down in a remote area of Chhattisgarh state. Chhattisgarh police spokesman Rajesh Mishra said the officers were on an anti-Maoist operation at the time of the attack.
"It's a war-like situation here," said Mishra.
Nine police officers were killed and the whereabouts of a 10th officer remains unknown. Officials say participants of the Maoist movement aim to overthrow the government and gain political power.
