A suicide bomber acting for the Taliban attacked a police station in northwest Pakistan on Wednesday. Officials say the bomber drove a car packed with at least 660 pounds of explosives into a police building in Peshawar, killing seven police officers and wounding 30 others.
A Taliban spokesman said the attack was carried out in revenge for the killing of Osama bin Laden. Bin Laden was killed by U.S. forces on May 2 at a compound in Abbottabad. The bombing comes two days after the Taliban launched another revenge attack on a naval base in Karachi. Pakistani officials say 10 troops were killed in the 17 hour siege on the Mehran naval air station. The attack was carried out by six Taliban militants armed with grenades, machine guns and rockets. Four of the militants were killed. Authorities believe the other two attackers were able to escape.
After Wednesday’s suicide bombing, a senior Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province official vowed to “fight till the defeat of these terrorists.”
