EU Envoy Tours Gaza, Places Blame for Humanitarian Crisis on Hamas Militants

After touring the destruction left behind following a three-week offensive by Israeli troops a senior European Union envoy declared the humanitarian crisis that now exists in Gaza was mainly the fault of Hamas militants.

Louis Michel, the humanitarian aid chief for the EU, said Hamas was “overwhelmingly responsible” for the current condition of Gaza and openly declared “Hamas is a terrorist movement and it has to be denounced as such.”

Michel also announced that more than $70 million worth of emergency aid had been set aside for Gaza but warned that members of the EU were getting tired of providing funding for the continued reconstruction of Gaza’s infrastructure, an infrastructure that is often targeted in Israeli attacks.

While the aid has been announced Michel also called on Israel to open its borders to allow the flow of aid into Gaza.

More than 1,300 Palestinians are believed to have died in the three-week attack while another 50,000 have been left homeless and another 400,000 are without running water.
