Dinara
Safina moved one step closer to her first Grand Slam singles title with a three
set victory over crowd favorite Jelena Dokic in the quarterfinals of the Australian
Open. Safina took the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 to advance in just under two and a
half hours to move into the semifinals.
Safina
took advantage of 54 unforced errors from Dokic and broke the Australian on 6
of 19 opportunities. Dokic found herself in her fifth straight three-set match
at the Australian Open and it was clear she had grown a bit tired as she
struggled to command her serve throughout the match.
Safin
a has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title but reached the finals at the
French Open last year before falling to Ana Ivanovic. She reached the
semi-finals of the U.S. Open last year as well.
