Rwanda
has stepped up their security at several refugee camps in the country following
a rise in protests against the government’s decision to arrest popular
Congolese Tutsi leader Gen, Laurent Nkunda.
Police
and soldiers were called in to put down the protests, reportedly using live
bullets to suppress protestors who demanded Nkunda’s release. Nkunda was arrested
last week after entering Rwanda to discuss a joint military operation being
carried out with DR Congo government troops.
Nkunda
has maintained that the battle she has fought in eastern DR Congo have only
been waged to protect the minority Tutsi community. The rebel leader had established
a solid relationship with Rwandan leaders in 1994 when he helped the Tutsis
drive the Hutus out of power following the well-documented genocide that left
more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus dead.
Last
week’s arrest surprised many who felt Rwanda had turned its back on the man who
helped them in a time of need. It is unclear if Rwanda plans to hand Nkunda
over to DR Congo where he is wanted on war crimes charges.
Many
of the protestors are Congolese refugees who believe Nkunda is their only hope
of returning to their home. They say that Nkunda has provided protection from
Hutu attacks in the troubled region but Rwanda and DR Congo have agreed they would
push the Hutu forces out of eastern DR Congo.
