The Pacific Island Forum has given Fiji’s military rulers until the end of the year to hold elections or the country will face sanctions.
Fiji has been under the rule of Frank Bainimarama since the army chief seized power in 2006. Bainimarama has said he would not hold elections until he completed a series of reforms but has implied that those reforms could take more than a decade.
Bainimarama has defended his position and said he plans to purge the current political system in Fiji of its racist policies and corruption.
Regional leaders have run out of patience with Bainimarama and issued a statement saying the current situation in Fiji was unacceptable, “More than two years of rule by an unelected military government, with no clear timetable for the return of constitutional government to the people, is not acceptable by international standards.”
Sanctions against Fiji could include the exclusion from regional meetings and the withholding of funds fro developmental projects.
