The 2008 ACO U.S. Nationals KIng of Cornhole, hosted by Sam's Town Las Vegas, is history. The winner and still King of Cornhole Champion is Matt Guy. The competition this year was better than last year but Matt continues to elevate his game and has a 3-Peat King of Cornhole to show for it.
The crowd was louder, bigger, and more enthusiastic than any previous ACO U.S. Nationals. Nearly 200 people watched and particapated in the January 23 & 24 cornhole event that included competitive doubles, social doubles, and the main event, the King of Cornhole Tournament. Participants braved the elements as they made their way to Sam's Town Las Vegas from Ohio, Indiana, South Carolina, California, Utah, Washington, West Virginia, New Jersey, Illinois, Arizona, Nevada, North Carolina, and Kentucky. Two of the players: Charles Fletcher and Albert Hazlett, both from Kentucky, put their fears to the side and flew for the first time so they could be part of the ACO Cornhole Nationals. Both of them pulled upsets in the first round and Albert gave the number 2 seed Randy Atha, from Ohio, all he could handle taking Randy to the third game in a best of three match.
For those of you that think the women don't have game take a second look. Four women qualified for the King of Cornhole Tournament field of 64, and two of them Sheri Eggleton , from Indiana, and Dyana Tolliver, out of Ohio, qualified for the sweet 16. These girls know how to pitch. Dyana Tolliver and her partner Mark Allen won the ACO Competitive Doubles Tournament.
There was a surprise in the final 4 of the K of C Tournament where the 29th seed Bret Guy worked his way through the rounds to only be met head on by his father Matt Guy the number 1 seed. Matt took the opportunity to teach Bret one more lesson and went on to play Steve Vanderver the number 3 seed who knocked off Randy Atha the number 2 seed.
An interesting side note is that Shawn Guy, Matt's younger son, teamed up with Craig Tolliver to win the social doubles. Is cornhole in the Guy family bloodline or what
