Fernando
Verdasco has reached his first Grand Slam singles semifinals after he knocked
off Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in four sets 7-6 (7-2), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2.
Verdasco
put 78 percent of his first serves in play and won 69 percent of those
offerings while remaining strong on his second serve as he won 59 percent of
those. Verdasco also took advantage of his break point opportunities, winning
all four presented. Tsonga, who reached the finals at the Australian Open last
year, couldn’t get past his 40 unforced errors and while he had 13 break point
opportunities he only converted on two.
Verdasco
had never advanced past the second round of the Australian Open prior to 2009.
He has reached the fourth round of the French Open and Wimbledon twice and the U.S.
Open once.
