UN’s World Health Organization Says Death Toll from Cholera Outbreak in Zimbabwe Now Tops 3,000

The United Nations’ World Health Organization has released a disturbing report concerning the state of Zimbabwe, inflating the number of deaths from a cholera outbreak to more than 3,000. That number is three times more than what was published just two weeks ago.

Zimbabwe has seen their health sector deteriorate and their public works departments fail as the country’s economy has been left in shambles. Facing staggering inflation and unemployment figures topping 80 percent many relief agencies have said Zimbabwe was in the midst of a humanitarian crisis and without assistance from international bodies the country would collapse.

The cholera outbreak has been blamed almost exclusively on the government’s failure to provide clean drinking water and properly treat sewage through their sanitation department. The outbreak became worse as the health sector was left without the necessary medicines to treat those affected by the disease.
