According to the French Victims’ Association, authorities have recovered 75 bodies from the wreckage of Air France Flight 447. Robert Soulas, the vice-president of the association, told CNN that none of the bodies have been identified. This week’s recovery combined with the 52 bodies recovered after the June 2009 crash leaves 101 bodies still in the Atlantic Ocean. Flight 447 was en route to Paris, France from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with 228 people aboard when it crashed into the Atlantic Ocean on June 1, 2009.
Last week, authorities released information contained on the data recorders recovered from the wreckage. France’s Bureau of Investigation said failed speed sensors played a part in the crash. The plane’s autopilot and auto-thrust functions disengaged before two separate stall warnings sounded off and the co-pilot discovered the plane was showing inaccurate speed readings. The Airbus A330 then climbed to 38,000 feet before it stalled and began falling about 10,000 feet per minute. Flight 447 plunged into the Atlantic Ocean after a 3 minute and 30 second decent.
BEA director Jean-Paul Troadex said the bureau is “still trying to interpret” information on the data recorders. “Our role is not to assess blame, merely to determine the facts,” he said.
