The Food and Drug Administration has conducted an investigation into a peanut butter recall made by the Peanut Corporation of America, and has determined that the company shipped their products knowing it was contaminated with salmonella.
“PCA distributed potentially contaminated product to more than 70 consignee firms, for use as an ingredient in hundreds of different products, such as cookies, crackers, cereal, candy and ice cream,” said a statement on the FDA’s website.
The FDA reveals the plant tested products 12 times between June 2007 and September 2008 and found they were contaminated by salmonella, but still shipped them to buyers. They also report that the plant failed to correct mold growing on their walls and ceilings.
The salmonella outbreak took place between September and January. More than 500 people were infected and at least 8 deaths have been blamed on the outbreak.
