Australian Open 2009 Semifinals Results: Dinara Safina Reaches Finals after Straight Set Win Over Vera Zvonareva

Dinara Safina has advanced to her second career finals at a Grand Slam after knocking off fellow Russian Vera Zvonareva in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) at the Australian Open.

Safina certainly didn’t look unstoppable but she managed to grab big points when the opportunities presented themselves. Despite 42 unforced errors Safina hit 28 winners and broke Zvonareva’s serve on 5 of 11 chances.

Safin a has yet to win a Grand Slam singles title but reached the finals at the French Open last year before falling to Ana Ivanovic. She reached the semi-finals of the U.S. Open last year as well.
