Large
crowds of protestors have taken to the streets across France, demanding the government
step up their efforts to protect jobs and wages.
The
protests had been organized by eight of France’s major unions and included employees
in banks, schools, hospitals, transportation and post offices. As a result of the
protests several students stayed home while rail and air services were
disrupted.
Estimates
have suggested that 23 percent of the country’s public sector employees joined the
demonstrations, and the total number of participants neared one million. There
has been growing frustration with the government and their handling of the economic
crisis that has gripped France.
Protestors
have been pointing to the government’s decision to provide multi-billion euro
bailouts for banks while providing little help to smaller industries that have
suffered in the economic slowdown.
The
demonstrations were being supported by opposition Socialist Party leader
Martine Aubry who noted, “to express what worries them: the fact that they work
and yet cannot make ends meet, retired people who just can't make it
[financially], the fear of redundancies, and a president of the Republic and a
government that just don't want to change policy.”
