The
United States embassy in Iraq will have to find a new security company after a decision
was made by the minister of the interior to not renew the license of security
firm Blackwater.
That
decision was due in large part to the Sept. 2007 incident in which Blackwater
guards shot and killed 14 Iraqi civilians in what was called an unprovoked
attack by witnesses. The five guards had been escorting American diplomats
through the city of Baghdad when they said they were attacked in Nisoor Square.
They then opened fire on the crowded street, killing 14 and injuring another 18
civilians.
Shortly
after the shooting Iraq put pressure on Washington to end their dealings with
Blackwater but the U.S. renewed their contract with the firm in 2008. That
decision is now out of the hands of the Americans following the signing of a
new security pact agreed upon by Iraq and the U.S.
According
to that agreement Iraq now determines which Western security firms will be
allowed to operate in their country.
