Blackwater Forced to Leave Iraq by Government Officials

Iraqi officials have announced U.S. security firm Blackwater Worldwide will be forced to leave Iraq as their security license will not be renewed.

The decision comes after a November agreement in which the United States and Iraq agreed the Iraqi government will decide which security firms can operate in their country.

“We have been informed that Blackwater’s private security company operating license will not be granted. We don’t have specifics about dates. We are working with the government of Iraq and our contractors to address the implications of this decision,” the U.S. embassy said Thursday.

Blackwater, a firm hired to protect U.S. diplomats in Iraq, made headlines in 2007 after an incident that left 17 Iraqi civilians dead. Five guards involved are accused of using excessive and unnecessary force. They face manslaughter and weapons charges.
