Appearing
before the state senate to address his impeachment Illinois Gov. Rod
Blagojevich told his audience that he has “done nothing wrong” and appealed for
a sense of fairness when jurors decide his fate.
Blagojevich
had earlier said he would not appear during the impeachment trial because he
was not being afforded the opportunity to defend himself against the accusations.
Blagojevich wanted to call witnesses to discredit the allegations formed against
him but that was not allowed. He then went on a media blitz where he stated his
case before the people before deciding to appear before the trial on the final
day.
It
didn’t take long for Blagojevich to tell those in attendance “there is no
evidence that shows there was any wrongdoing by me as governor” and he dismissed
several damaging audio tapes that implied he had solicited bribes as normal
fare in the world of politics.
Blagojevich
has denied the allegations since he was arrested in December and has refused to
resign, saying he has done nothing wrong, instead insisting that he was the target
of a political vendetta.
A
vote on Blagojevich’s future is expected to take place later on Thursday.
