Toxic Water: Mississippi River Flooding

Managing Indoor Environments After Flooding

Environmental Diagnostics Laboratory (EDLab) analyses potential contaminants in flood damaged indoor environments

Recent Mississippi River flooding will require a massive clean-up operation in order to prevent catastrophic conditions due to microbial growth (bacterial and/or fungal) in indoor environments.  Spurred by intense rainfall, this flood is estimated to be the largest swelling of water since the “Great Mississippi Flood of 1927”.

Flood water may contain microorganisms, such as bacteria and molds, viruses, raw sewage, dead animals and other debris. These materials influence indoor environments adversely, which may lead to various health and hygiene issues and place dwellers at a greater risk of getting sick or developing a number of other complications.

The flood borne microorganisms can establish them selves very rapidly and penetrate inside the building environments. The removal of these contaminates is not only difficult, but also requires special skills. It is important to know the types and concentration of bacteria and fungi as well as the moisture content of the structure, temperature and toxic substances/chemicals. This information is extremely beneficial in a successful clean-up of indoor environments after such natural disasters.

EDLab at Pure Air Control Services has developed a number of DIY environmental test kits in collaboration with Building Health Check LLC. These tests are design for the initial screening of potential contaminants in flood damaged indoor environments. These kits are available at www.indoorairtest.com or by calling 800- 422-7873 ext. 804.
