Lapides is best known for founding, hosting and producing Un-Cabaret, the legendary live show that led the 'alternative comedy' revolution, but when strangers recognize her. it is usually from her brief but captivating appearance as the performance artist on "Sex and the City".

Lapides established herself as a host at the live Un-Cabaret alternative comedy show, bringing together top comedy talent in a format that required a lively guardian. She went on to host Un-Cab on Comedy Central as well as on Comedy World Radio where she also hosted the talk format daily Lapides Lapides Experience. Additionally she hosts the Un-Cabaret podcast on audible.com, Say The Word at The Skirball Cultural Center and The Other Network Writers Room, an audio interview series with top TV comedy writers and showrunners. Lapides is also an accomplished visual artist. Her urban primitive drawings, paintings and books have always been part of her solo performance work.
Lapides is outspoken and politically-active. She has performed and produced benefits with dozens of organizations, including the ACLU/Court TV "Freedom Files", a benefit CD for the Drug Policy Alliance, shows and events for PEN, NOW, Feral Cat Alliance, Barbara Boxer, and many others. During the 1992 Presidential election, she ran a guerrilla campaign to make First Lady an elected position which was featured on CNN, in People and Interview Magazines.
