According to volunteers with the three Houston charities competing in the “Cadillac Cares” Houston Challenge, the non-profits are making an impact in the community. The Children’s Museum of Houston, Houston Food Bank and the YMCA of Greater Houston are competing for an award of $50,000 in advertising in the “Cadillac Cares” Houston Challenge, sponsored by the Houston Area Cadillac Dealers and running through June 6, 2011 on Facebook.
Each charity has its biography and a voting button on the Cadillac Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/HoustonAreaCadillacDealers. Each fan can cast a ballot for their favorite charity every day. The promotion began May 9 and runs through June 6. The charity with the most votes on June 6 will receive $50,000 in advertising.
A volunteer from each non-profit shares how they have seen their charity have an impact on Houstonians.
• Children’s Museum of Houston
Pasadena resident Lupe Palacios has volunteered with the Children’s Museum of Houston for 14 years. She has witnessed the effect the museum has on visiting teachers. “From an educator’s standpoint, I have seen several teachers become better teachers. Those teachers go back to their home schools and help other teachers become better teachers, as well. I have heard many teachers comment about learning how to teach the same material in new and exciting ways after visiting the Children’s Museum of Houston and/or attending a CMH workshop or presentation. The effects of CMH’s educational focus are immeasurable.”
• Houston Food Bank
Houston resident Marcus D. Chery has volunteered with the Houston Food Bank for two years and has been touched personally. “I have seen the Houston Food Bank change a person’s life first hand with a former co-worker. The co-worker recently retired and does not receive enough funds from her Social Security check to pay bills and purchase food, so she depends on the Houston Food Bank community agency that distributes food to her once a week. My co-worker has told me that without the Houston Food Bank she would not know what she would do, because she has too much pride to ask her family for assistance and government assistance only approved $10 for her in food stamps. Just hearing that story alone makes me know that the Houston Food Bank is doing something major in the city of Houston!
• YMCA of Greater Houston
Houston resident David Goldstein has volunteered with the YMCA of Greater Houston for 10 years. He knows that positive can lead to more positive. “A few years back I listened to a father talk about his experience with one of the YMCA’s father-daughter programs. At the introductory meeting, one of the other dads introduced himself by saying that he had been diagnosed with a terminal disease and had been given a year to live. He wanted to do something with his daughter that would provide the best and longest lasting memories of their time together, and he believed that YMCA program to be the best way to do that. They all shared that year together, and when the dad passed away, they continued to include his daughter and her mom in their activities. He was moved by the experience, and I was moved by the story.”
The $50,000 media award in the “Cadillac Cares" Houston Challenge includes television, radio and print advertising.
The other two charities will receive a $1000 cash donation as well as public relations exposure during the challenge.
Charities will encourage their donors, employees, friends and fans to “like” the Houston Area Cadillac Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/HoustonAreaCadillacDealers. After liking the page, fans can access the VOTE FOR Cadillac Cares Challenge tab on the left hand side of their screen. This will take voters to the voting app where they will like their charity.
Voters can like a charity once a day every day throughout the challenge.
