Toyota announced Wednesday the worldwide recall of 106,000 Pruis vehicles for a problem with the power steering. The car maker said the recall affects 52,000 Prius sold in the United States and manufactured between 2001 and 2003.
According to a press release posted by Toyota, turning the steering wheel of the affected vehicles may become difficult over time because of loose nuts in the steering gear box. "If the steering wheel is repeatedly and strongly turned to the full-lock position, there is a possibility the nuts securing the pinion shaft in the steering gear box assembly may become loose. Toyota dealers will install improved nuts that secure the pinion shaft at no charge to the vehicle owner. The repair will take approximately 4 hours depending upon the dealer's work schedule,” the company said.
Owners of recalled vehicles will receive a notice in the mail in early July, according to Toyota.
