We hear on the news everyday of tsunamis, tornados and earthquakes that have caused devastation and destruction around the world. The reporter describes the widespread impact of how this single event will undoubtedly affect the lives of so many. During the horribly descriptive commentary there is always a death toll mentioned; followed by an interview with a person who lost a loved one due to the tragic event. The destruction caused by drug addiction is much more devastating, happens so much more often, destroying everything and everyone in its’ path.
According to data compiled in 2003, 1.8 million deaths were related to drugs and alcohol compared to the 700,000+ as a result of tsunamis, tornados, and earthquakes. There are also an additional 69 million people with diseases that are directly related to the use and abuse of drugs and alcohol. Though natural disasters are devastating events and cause tremendous loss of life, there is the other, nearly invisible, on-going disaster: addiction and its aftermath.
The worst effects of addiction are not the events that happen to the addict alone; it is the devastation that the addicted leave in their wake. It is the wife and child that lose their husband and father because his addiction becomes his only focus in life. This one-track way of thinking takes him out of his home, out of his office and on to the streets only to fill that never satiated craving. The ripple effect unfortunately does not end there; the home he left with his family inside cannot be paid for, so it too is lost. This man’s addiction has now put his wife and child out on to the streets with him. I could go on and on of what his addiction cost him: health, wealth, happiness, etc...
The steps for drug and/or alcohol treatment at Suncoast Rehab are designed to repair an addict physically, mentally, and emotionally so that they are able to at least begin to put back together what they have destroyed. The family can have their husband and father back; the person who once cared for no one and nothing is taught how to live again. The program at S.R.C. is like no other in its ability to get a person back to the person they were before their addiction. I am living proof of that.
